Between
1975 and 1990 the “land of Cedars” went through a series of acts of
violence which culminated in a civil war and which devastated Beirut and
Mount Lebanon in particular.
Foreigners
as well as a large number of Lebanese citizens left the country, taking
refuge in various parts of the Mediterranean and Arabian gulf Countries.
The foreign business community which at the
beginning of the events was comprised of thousands of enterprises,
including 100 insurers and brokers, was evacuated or forced to shut
down.
As opposed to those who left, a large number of
Lebanese Businessmen resolved to stay on, and to continue servicing
their Homeland, as best they can, under the circumstances.
It is at that particular juncture that J.E.
Zakhour & Co. was formed, and registered at the Commercial Court of
Beirut, Sub No. 48874 on September 22nd , 1984.
In 1989, Lebanese leaders met in Taef (Saudi
Arabia) and agreed on a national accord, which was subsequently
converted into a new constitution for Lebanon.
Peace returned since then to Lebanon, and the
Central Government regained control of the country. Simultaneously, a
reconstruction plan was put in place and a wholly new restructured
Central District was rebuilt in Beirut. This encouraged foreign
interests to come back, and reactivate their former branches agencies in
Lebanon.
At the same time, most of those Lebanese who had
sought safety abroad, came back home to share in the national effort
being deployed for the resurrection of their homeland.
New investors from all parts of the world, and
Arabs in particular also joined in, taking share in new projects in
different sections, including banks, insurance companies, hotels and
service companies of all kinds.
Among those who made a come-back were Citibank,
chase, Bank of America ING, ABN-Amro, 3M, Merryll-Lunch, Banco di Roma,
etc…
In 1988, J. E. Zakhour & Co. was assigned to
handle the “ Run-off” of Cigna former branch in Lebanon.
In 1996, J. E. Zakhour & Co. was appointed
Regional Consultant for the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa for
